Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note 1:
Successfully installing a CAD seal without the correct
Seal Installer has about the same chance of success as buying a winning lottery ticket. Makeshift methods don't usually get the job done due to the restricted area you need to work in, and the amount of compression needed to be applied to the seal. Due to the way we have to make the
Tool, your Seal Installer and Seal MUST match. QT1070 will only work with original equipment design, CR manufactured seal such as our QU40271. Seals manufactured by other seal manufacturers WILL NOT WORK WITH THIS INSTALLER!!!! We do not manufacture installers for this application to fit any other competitive seal designs such as National, NOK, or NAK.
Dan the Gear Man Tech® Note 2:
Whenever you remove the front axle shafts on your big Ram, inspect the shafts and axle tubes for any signs of differential fluid leakage. It's a lot cheaper and easier to replace the seals than rebuilding your diff after it blows up due to oil starvation! Differential removal is required for the left (drivers) side seal, but not the the disconnect (right) side on vacuum shift axles. These are tricky seals to install, but you can EASILY do it with our tools! QT1133 differential case spreader is definitely recommended but not absolutely required for differential removal/installation. We also find QT9018 dead-blow sledge handy to reinstall the differential.
Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note 3:
Once the axle is disassembled, the old seals can be easily removed with our QT1145 and QT1216 Seal Remover Tools or other suitable tool such as a length of sturdy pipe that will fit inside the axle tube. You will also need to clean the inside of the axle tube to remove dirt and crud that could get pushed into your new seal during reassembly.
Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note 4:
QT1070 Installer is an Adjustable Depth Installer that allows you to offset the seal to a deeper depth to miss a groove or other damage on the axle shaft. However, YOU MUST be careful you do not set the seal TOO DEEP which may place the seal beyond the axle shaft seal surface!

All Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4 trucks were built with Dana 60 CAD front axles. For the 2002 model year, early production trucks have the CAD Dana 60, but most later production axles do not have the CAD feature. The Dodge Dana 60 was replaced by a AAM 925 axle for the 2003 model year. |
